The Role of the U.S. Foreign Service Around the Globe

Stefanie Altman-Winans is a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. She is currently in Arabic language training and will be serving in Amman, Jordan as the Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy next summer. Her most recent assignment was as the Deputy Director in the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy where she managed both the Press and Strategic Communications Units for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and served as its spokesperson. In prior assignments, she worked in the Bureau of International Organizations coordinating our multilateral public diplomacy efforts across the various United Nations agencies. Her overseas assignments have included doing public diplomacy work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Poland. Her Washington assignments have included the coordination of USG assistance programs in the Caucasus and reporting on human rights issues in the former Soviet Union. In 2017, she received a Masters in National Security Resource Strategy from National Defense University's Eisenhower School and has both a BA and MA from The American University in Washington, D.C. She speaks Bosnian, Turkish, Polish and Russian. Stefanie hopes to visit the State of Maine this winter.
